Biography
Ishaan Subramanian is a multi-instrumentalist with a passion for education. He started learning cello and saxophone in elementary school before switching saxophone for bassoon in middle school, which became his primary instrument. Through middle and high school, he studied bassoon with Wendy Large and cello with Cynthia Longley. During his time in high school, he was a member of the two top orchestras of New Jersey Youth Symphony on bassoon and cello, performed in the NJMEA All-State Symphonic Band and Orchestra on bassoon, played at Carnegie Hall with Honors Performance Series, as well as occasional freelancing with amateur and semiprofessional ensembles on both bassoon and contrabassoon.
Ishaan currently studies Music Education and Computer Science at the University of Miami. He takes bassoon lesson with Prof. Gabriel Beavers and oboe lessons with Prof. Robert Weiner. He plays bassoon, contrabassoon, and oboe in Frost Symphonic Winds. Ishaan is also a member of the Frost Band of the Hour, where he is a trumpet section leader, and the pep band, where he plays piccolo, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone as needed.
As an educator, he teaches cello and bassoon at New Jersey Youth Symphony's Summer Winds camp. He is an advocate of becoming well versed in any music, not just the music that is common on ones primary instrument. He derives his passion for teaching from the belief that music has the potential to be a powerful and positive force in the lives of students.
Ishaan enjoys arranging, and several of his arrangements have been performed. Some of his most notable arrangements are Gounod's Funeral March of a Marionette for bassoon quartet, Excerpts from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker for reed quintet, and Dvorak's Symphony no. 8 for double reed octet. In his free time, he enjoys composing, playing video games, and cooking.
